Vulcan returns to the skies
Acrylic on board
10 x 8
The inspiration for this picture and one of the outstanding memories I have from 2008 was watching the Vulcan flying at the Farnborough air show, a beautiful aircraft, such a size and such grace.
After serving for many years in the front line defence of the UK and having been replaced in that role by submarines the Vulcan was close to retirement when Britain was called on to defend the Falklands. It was our only aircraft still in service able to reach the islands and to do so involved a tremendous amount of organisation, the last leg from Ascension Islands needed many refueling aircraft, some only just reaching the return airfield on fumes.
